These portraits were taken during my residency at Light Work in Syracuse, NY in May 2003. My family lives very close to Syracuse so it was a rare opportunity to shoot and print simultaneously. I wanted to make formal portraits of each family member, including myself in an activity that we each identify as refelcting our individuality. Each portrait is a collaboration between the subject and myself. The group portrait is the only formal record of everyone existing together. A great deal of effort went into each image but especially the group portrait. Whenever we tried to shoot it either someone was too cranky to hold still, someone was too busy and had to be interrupted in what they were trying to do, someone was not there at all and could not be located, or else the weather was acting up. These images are part of the permanent collection at Light Work. To see more images and journal entries from my residency at Light Work please visit my May Journal.
